The State of Misalignment
We’ve all seen the results of poor alignment:
- Poor performance (duplicate efforts, dropped hand-offs, excessive time to completion)
- Poor customer service (not having all the information a customer needs, not having the most up-to-date information, different people giving different and conflicting responses)

One of the most jarring statements I’ve ever heard was made by anthropologist, Margaret Mead:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
Small groups of committed individuals have one thing in common: they are driven by a powerful purpose. People who come together around a purpose not only put aside their individual differences, but use their differences to the advantage of their cause.

My favorite auto mechanic has this machine set-up that aligns the wheels of my car to keep it headed in the right direction. After a good alignment, I don’t have to fight to steer, the tires aren’t wearing down prematurely, the gas mileage improves, and the ride is much smoother. Wouldn’t it be nice if organizations had something like that?
