Tom - excellent post. I'd add to your list of tools to improve alignment: Dealing with the moose on the table. Once change agents show they add value and are trusted by leaders, they can tactfully and effectively bring to light previously "undiscussable" issues at the heart of alignment challenges. In today's organizations, many have multiple reporting lines and are responsible for work done by people they don't manage. These factors are often at the root of misalignment; because they seem complex and intractable, they're often avoided, or people are blamed rather than having constructive dialogue to agree on root causes and address them. Great opportunities for change agents!

Miguel, you are right on the money! It is imtarepive that U.S. organizations realize that cultural diversity is an integral part of their current and future growth and prosperity whether it is appreciated or not. Tremendo!

Amen, Dave. As always, it is a matter of helping execs see the long term work on the front line and helping the front line performaers continually see the big picture. Finish lines are relative and contextual. They exist for individuals and the organization. Thanks!!

Mal, your post is inspiring. At the same time, with short-term focus so prevalent, it's worth reflecting on why that is. By doing both - addressing the root causes of "short-term-itis," WHILE emphasizing the value of longer term perspectives - we increase the odds of success over the long term. One root cause of short term focus is that sometimes it works for individuals; although much less often for organizations. The key then is to help leaders act in ways that reinforce the longer view for EVERYONE in the organization.
